Executive director

Job Brief

The Executive Director is the chief paid executive for AmCham Saudi Arabia, is the figurehead of the Chamber, is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the Chamber’s staff and advocates and promotes business within the community. The Executive Director is also responsible for the oversight of the Chamber’s financial activities, is accountable to the Board of Directors and works directly with the Board and Executive leadership  to set direction for the Chamber.  The Executive Director is responsible for new business development, management of special projects, recommendations on new initiatives for the Board’s consideration, and expansion of services and benefits to increase its membership, its community linkages, and its relevance to business in Saudi Arabia and the U.S. 

The role reports directly to the Board of Directors, supervisors the Chapter Directors in Jeddah and Eastern Province and oversees the other team members in Riyadh including the Head of Finance, Head of Member Relations and Head of Communications.  The Executive Director regularly liaises with Committee Chairs to ensure strategic coordination of effort. Represents the American Chamber of Commerce in Saudi Arabia in a positive manner to the public, Chamber membership, and other appropriate audiences.

  • Represents the Chamber at community and member events, conferences, workshops, and seminars as needed for personal growth and networking.

  • Develops and maintains relationships with Saudi-based business councils and other American Chambers of Commerce worldwide.

  • Responsible for overseeing  success of all Chamber events including acquiring speakers, securing venues, establishing timelines, creating marketing materials, approving budgets, directing staff, organizing event registration and providing opening remarks for 25+ events annually in coordination with Chapter Engagement Managers and Coordinators. 

  • Assures staff has adequate training, supervision, and regular annual performance evaluations.

  • Provides opportunities for staff to develop professionally.

  • Creates working conditions that are conducive to maximum performance and employee morale.

Responsibilities

  • Administrative

    • Leads the day-to-day operations of the organization including its chapters.

    • Oversees and manages the fiscal resources of the organization with the Head of Finance.

    • Prepares the annual operating budget with line-item identification of expenses and income for all activities of the Chamber and its related organizations or projects.

    • Oversees all expenditures in accordance with the budget in coordination with the Head of Finance..

    • Oversees negotiations and approves contracts as required for vendors and hotel event venues in coordination with the Head of Finance.

    • Serves as corporate secretary to the Board of Governors and Executive Committee and prepares notice agendas and ensures minutes are recorded for associated meetings.

    • Monitors Chamber activities to assure conformance with Chamber Charter & Bylaws.

  • Membership

    • Works with the Head of Membership to seek out and recruit prospective members, endeavoring to increase membership and to maintain a high membership retention rate.

    • Sets AmCham goals for acquiring new members and provides reports to the Board on the status of those activities.

    • Offers Chamber members events and activities that provide professional development and networking opportunities.

    • Establishes personal rapport with potential members through email/phone/in-person visits.

    • Is well-versed in member benefits and sponsorship benefits to understand and address members’ needs.

  • Marketing & Communications

    • Works with the Head of Communication to direct all communications to the membership and public.

    • Ensures that organizational and business concerns are communicated regularly and effectively to all parties concerned and that the organizational collateral, social media, newsletters, and electronic communications are accurate, timely and reflective of the organizational views.

    • Oversees maintenance and creates new content creation for the website

    • Approves content for social media.

    • Approve content for the monthly newsletters distributed through Glue-Up

    • Works with Public Relations Agencies to create and distribute press releases to local media (Arabic & English newspapers, Saudi News Agency)

    • Approves designs or supervises the design of collateral materials needed to advertise events and other Chamber activities

Qualifications

  • Must possess strong English verbal and written communication skills. Some Arabic is preferred but not required. 

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace – G Suite, CRM software (GlueUp) or similar programs. 

  • Familiarity with social media platforms: LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram 

  • The ideal candidate will be an energetic, sincere, and open-minded leader with strong written communication, public speaking & presentation abilities.

  • Bachelor's degree and demonstrated experience in leadership roles, including at least five (5) years of supervisory experience.

  • Self-starter who has a high level of initiative and organization with a high degree of tact and diplomacy.

  • Experience working with diverse groups and varied industries to promote inclusive growth.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading several projects at once.

  • Able to work independently and meet deadlines in a multi-task environment.

  • Experience in organizing and marketing events.

  • This position may require travel outside of the local area for conferences or special meetings.

  • Extensive stakeholder management expertise, including influencing senior stakeholders, and experience with American business, commerce, relationships and projects in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East region.

  • Preferred candidate is a U.S. Citizen and has existing sponsorship in Saudi Arabia

  • This is a full-time position based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with some weekend and evening work required.

  • Must be able to travel within Riyadh for events and member site visits.
